Lt. Manley,
I have attended a lot of training over the course of 31 years with the Army, and 18 years as a municipal Law Enforcement Officer. As a former School Resource Officer,
as well as an Army and FLETC qualified Instructor, I have had the opportunity to spend hundreds of
hours in front of a classroom teaching varied subjects to adults and youth alike. I can honestly say
with great respect, I have NEVER met an instructor or teacher, who knows their material as inside out
and upside down as you. During the Verbal Judo Intructors Course held at the Port of Seattle from 21-25 Apr 08,
you impressed me, as well as the other students, with your complete and ABSOLUTE mastery of the subject matter.
It was truly a pleasure to have you with us and "Clear the Cloud"

Lt. Manley,
I would like to restate what a pleasure it was to attend your class today!
I learned more about effective communications today than I ever did at academy.
I am looking forward to telling my partners and co-workers about the concepts that you taught me today.
Mike, you gave me so many more tools today, I will definately need a different belt to hold them all (maybe I will need an invisible tool box in my car).
As I said when we parted today, thank you for sharing your time, knowledge and experiences with me. You have given me a further tactical edge that will
greatly aid me in coming home to my boys and loving girlfriend. And for that I am forever in your debt. Please extend my deepest appreciations to Dr. Thompson.
If you or any other members of your organization ever find yourselves in Eastern Washington again, please do not hesistate to contact me! E-mail me anytime!
Again sir, from the bottom of my heart, thank you!
Sincerely Submitted,

Mike,
I just completed a weeklong "Train the Trainer" course that you
"performed" in Aurora, Colorado. The class was great. Thanks for
presenting a very informative curriculum. It's going to be a
pleasure to have the opportunity to assist those in my
department who will benefit from the training and to reinforce
the good job that is being done by those officers who are
currently using some form of the program. I'm sure that it will
only benefit the members of my department, the city and citizens
once we all become practitioners. Keep up the great work.

I attended the class at the Center for Domestic Preparedness in Anniston, Alabama.
As a trainer, I can use the tactics and techniques taught by Mike in our Verbal Judo class to assist me in both my professional life
as well as my personal life. I readily saw the application of these principles to other aspects of my life.
I should have taken this course years ago; it could have saved many heartaches and headaches.
Thanks Mike for the great job.

Sir,
I just wanted to drop you a note to say how much I enjoyed your class.
I attended your 1 day course in Puyallup WA on October 2nd 2007. I wish that the 2 day had been available.
Many of the concepts are parallel to those I have been teaching as part of our DT curriculum, and I hope to get
more LPD officers through your curriculum. I especially enjoyed the presentations on mushin/no mind, the 5 step hard style
and the 8 point traffic stop. I will be incorporating them into the way I do business.
I wish I had had your class before the encounter that resulted in my last citizen complaint.
Your 5 step hard style would have worked much better with the difficult person than what I said, (basically, if you don't like it,
hit the road jack). Thanks for the great training. I am also sending you an email for more information to submit to my command staff
about your curriculum and options for getting our officers through your program.

Comments: Mike- I attended your class at Casino Az and really believe I can practice and apply your 5-step hard
style when dealing with with our staff and guests. I can say that have been using at least 3 steps
consistently in
my own style, but am always disappointed when I don't quite reach the success I want with some situations. Your
equation sounds more complete and I am anxious to put it in play to see stronger results from my staff, guests, and
superiors in the "CYA" follow-up. "Mushin" is now my new mantra.
Thank you,
J

Mike - Just wanted to thank you again on the great recert at Sioux City. It's amazing I can continue to learn after this many years about new things and ways of doing the job. I don't know how we ever got anything done effectively in law enforcement before this course came along. Trial and error just doesn't cut it in this line of work. With all of the danger to officers out there today coming from all directions how can any agency or officer not want this tool. Keep up the good work and WOOSHA!

I really enjoyed the workshop/conference I attended the 19th of February.
I have been trying my best to use and practice what I learned in the session. There are still
days when students push my buttons and I make really bad decisions.
I have talked with my colleagues about the workshop and we would like our district to have
the workshop for all staff. I only have one question. Could you tell me what WOOSHA stands
for again? We only had the one day session.
Thank you again.

I attended the Verbal Judo class at the Rappahannock Regional Criminal Justice
Academy in October. This was and is a much needed class for all Law-enforcement. Not only will it work at work but it has worked for me at

occasions.
Thanks Mike and good luck to all who have taken this course.

I have purchased a couple of Dr. Thompson's book "Verbal Judo"

(when I was working as a healthcare proprietary security manager) who I felt
were a little weak in verbal intervention skills. Excellent information for

class real and shows his fellow police officers the realness of how verbal
judo will help them do their jobs on a daily basis. This class is highly

Verbal Judo is both a compelling curriculum and wonderful
presentation. I wish to commend Detective James Shanahan, Chief Instructor
of the Police Academy of New York City who recently joined our adjunct
faculty. He is an exceptional teacher. On several occasions I have seen his
presentation for the Emergency Services and Hostage Negotiations Units here
at the college. It is magnificent. His use of the material can be
provocative, strong and very compelling. Yet, his use of humor, asides,
anecdotes and metaphors is exceptional. At times there wasn't a dry eye in the
room. In a world of "typical" boring In-Service police training, Shanahan
sensei is an original. I want to take this time to highly RECOMMEND the Verbal
Judo program and one of its most talented instructors, James Shanahan.
