I have a friend who is a school bus driver. He is the one who directed me to this site and together we are ordering a few books. I hope they are as informative as they are said to be. With him being a bus driver for elementary as well as middle and high school, he has encountered many situations that will, I'm sure, be repeated in one way or another and he is looking into non-physical defusion of tense situations. Thanks for making this available to the public.

Mike,
I just wanted to thank you again for the excellent training course you provided to TYC in Austin, Texas on October 18-20, 2005. In my 15+ years in corrections training (both adult and juvenile) Verbal Judo is, by far, the most effective method of verbal intervention I have seen and used in the field. I truly believe that it has, and will continue to assist our staff in dealing more effectively with potentially volatile interactions with youth and improve officer safety to a significant degree.

Again, thanks for a job well done!

Regards,
Bill

Mike is an excellent teacher and performer - is there a difference? It has been a month since I attended his course and I purposefully waited to assess and comment on the material and the experience. Verbal judo has impacted my life. I assess my attitudes and demeanor more effectively and I have "calmed down" in tense or conflictive situations, looking for a solution that works for everyone. Yes I still read the book and review the materials and I have successfully applied verbal judo in my personal life as well.
Great course for everyone.
Thanks Mike.

I have been working with Mr. Manley for the past 3 years on a Verbal Judo course that has been specifically designed for my government Agency. I have been and continue to be impressed with Mr. Manley and his ability to learn about our Agency prior to teaching the course. As with many government agencies, ours is no different in our specific use of abbreviations and talk in code. Mr. Manley "learned the FDA" in order to teach the FDA and it has had a great impact on his teachings and on the students. It has made him a more effective and credible government contractor. I am often present on many of the trainings, as I provide the agency policy and answer necessary questions. Each time Mr. Manley gives his presentation, I learn something new. He is passionate about his teachings and is an awesome instructor. He is well respected by our Agency personnel.

A very practical approach to relating to the community we serve. Mike's insight and humor made the course enjoyable. We now use the 8 step "kata" and the officers see it's importance. I discussed the class with our town staff and we are bringing Mike back for another class. I would recommend this class to all agencies.

Hi Mike,
I really enjoyed the course and your forcing us to use the skills in the 8-step tactical empathy interviewing and the 5-step process with the ERPP concepts. It will help me in every relationship and I wish I could have known these techniques sooner when I had trouble with a former boss and subordinate at the same time that were wimps.
My brother-in-law, Robert Chung (Manhattan North that you probably worked with at one time or another), said the course was really good for him too in doing all you can verbally before having to use force.
I will keep using these techniques with the tougher clients like dietary supplement, device manufacturers or farmers since the drug company folks are usually very cooperative. For those angry pharmacy patients that are whacked out or ill it will help me there too while medication counseling with the open-ended verification questions.
Thanks for the voracious, energetic presentation and great role playing! You were great with those introverted scientists.
Best regards,
Mark

With Verbal Judo, any cop can learn to get compliance without getting sweaty.

Mike, your presentation of the Verbal Judo methods was dynamic, clear and powerful! Your two-day course literally flew by. Woosha! Kudos and thanks to Dr. Thompson for this breakthrough in communicating and dealing with others. I'm excited, and have already had opportunity to apply it with amazing results. It works almost like magic! My wife and I have 9 kids, and I can see this way of doing things making our family environment much more agreeable and enjoyable for everyone (it already has, just one day after the course!). I only wish I had learned it years ago, for their sakes. And it may well prove to save my life and others' in future law enforcement situations.

So I'd like to thank you, sir, for your professionalism, your dedication, and your ability to share this "gentle way" so effectively with your students. I feel I have learned from a true master, NYPD style.

Most sincerely yours,

I attended Mike's training last month in Jacksonville, Florida. The class was much more than I expected. I enjoyed it very much and highly recommend it. In fact, yesterday June 8, 2004, inmates in our Detention Center started a fire in one of our cells. This fire resulted in the total evacuation of our jail. We moved over 400 inmates, during the ordeal, in a 7 minute time period. During that time, I was tasked with setting up the temporary jail for the most dangerous inmates in an open convention hall. Needless to say, I used my verbal judo techniques several times, all of which were successful. The bottom line, we were able to contain agitated, violent inmates with a very little amount of force and a lot of verbal judo. During the 12hr. ordeal, no one escaped and, more importantly, no one was hurt and we all went home that night. Thanks, Mike, for giving me the tools.

I attended the Verbal Judo Train the Trainer session in Jacksonville, Fla. I was impressed with Mike's knowledge of the content, and his ability to present it in a manner that kept the student's attention throughout a long day. I am most impressed with what I believe is his desire to see the police profession brought back to the height of professionalism. I believe that Verbal Judo, when taught in conjunction with other vital tactics, can help almost any officer fulfill his or her promise and oath to earn and keep the public trust.
Thank you.

It offers a unique way to present the training material to officers using a common sense approach. Just finished the instructors course and finally, after 26 years of police work, here is a system that can effectively pass a way of working on to the new guys coming into the job. As an FTO and field training supervisor I have been trying to help others learn to do this job for almost twenty years and had mixed results getting it across. Now I can take even those "experienced" officers who won't believe it can work and show them not only why it will, but explain what it does for them. How have we operated over the years without this? I can see where this will give the "problem children" a reason to avoid the conflict rather than cause it. And it truly brings home the fact that the BOTTOM LINE IS FOR EACH OF US TO GO HOME SAFELY AT THE END OF THE SHIFT. I can hardly wait to start working with the officers on our department in order to make a difference.

This was a very informative and life-changing course for me. I found things I could use in dealing with difficult civilians over the counter in criminal records to dispel argumentative customers and diffuse anger from them as well as keep my own in check. In addition, I found information I could use in my own 27-year old marriage to help dispel communication problems that kept cropping up time after time for all these years. Wonderful course and I give it an excellent rating. The only thing I regret about it is that I didn't have the information it gives to use in helping raise our son--some things would have been done differently. Great course and I give it an A+. Thank you, Mike!

13 years ago this course saved my career when I attended the "train the trainer" course from Doc Thompson.  I recently attended my first re-cert by Mike Manley and can now credit this program with  undoubtedly saving the careers of others as I bring it back to my agency.
This isn't some PR-24 buy-back program in favor of nerf bats.  It's the true essence of what we do every day, contact people, and how to do it professionally and safely.  If you don't learn at least 10 new officer safety lessons in this course, you were either asleep or not listening.

Mike - I would just like to say that I thoroughly enjoyed taking your Instructor Certification Course last month.  You are an excellent instructor and made the class very interesting and fun.  Everywhere I go now, I'm thinking "Verbal Judo"!  I am very anxious to teach it to our staff.  I hope I will do it justice!  Thank you!  Marie Haverland

I just recently attended the verbal judo instructor course in Sacramento Ca. I thought that the class itself was awesome, and Mr. Manley was a great teacher. He was able to present a very engrossing topic into a more easy way to comprehend the information. I learned a great deal, and if I am able to impart this same knowledge onto the other members of my department I will be glad. As Mr. Manley stated if some officers were equipped with this information early on in their careers then maybe it just may have saved their lives.

I enjoyed your course Mike. When I returned back to work after the Verbal Judo course, I started using it on the streets. It has made a HUGE difference in the way I see and listen to people, AND the way they see me in just a short period of time. I can't wait till I get myself prepared to start instructing Verbal Judo because I truly believe in the power of words.  Thank you, Jerry.

I attended the June 19-20,2003 Verbal Judo Course in Philadelphia and was highly impressed. Verbal Judo has provided some of the investigators under my leadership the communication skills that they have been lacking for such a long time.  However, I do recognize this one thing...that like anything new and useful, you can't get good at it unless you put it to use.  In my earlier years (I mean in my youth), I was a student of the martial arts and while in South East Asia on a military tour, I undertook learning 'Lotus', which is kin to Tae Quon Do.  My instructor (who I only came to know as 'Teacher') imparted in me a wisdom that to this day I have never forgot. You see, as a youngster, I was so interested in moving past the exercises and into the heavy stuff, you know, like the important katas, that I almost omitted the most important lesson. You see, I wanted to be quick and agile, and move into the 'big kata' stuff like Bruce Lee, but then something happened. 'Teacher' pulled me aside and said these powerful words of wisdom which I have shared so many times with others and now impart to your reading audience. Teacher said, "Practice execution, speed will come! Practice execution...speed will come."  And so today, as I reflect upon the lesson, the 'katas' of verbal judo, which were taught by you, I remember 'Teacher'. The lesson of 'Teacher' still echoes in my mind. And so it is also true that we who undertake this lesson of verbal judo must now put it into practice. We must practice executing what has been taught, otherwise, we would have missed a very valuable life lesson.  The art of communication, like the art of martial defense does not come without effort. And, in the words of Og Mandino, "In all human affairs, there are efforts and there are results. And the strength of the effort is the measure of results. Gift, power, materials, intellectual, and spiritual gifts are the fruits of our labor. They are the thoughts completed, objects accomplished and visions realized." And so I say to you, Mike Manley -- the 'Teacher', thanks for the life lesson.

I thoroughly enjoyed Verbal Judo.  Although I am not an inspector, I do interact with regulated industry on a daily basis. Occasionally our office conducts on-site visits requested by firms and we conduct face-to-face meetings and training sessions.  I feel more confident that I will be able to handle any situation that may arise.

I would have preferred a full two days devoted to Verbal Judo and a day devoted to Situational Planning.  Due to time constraints, we were not able to review all of the plans prepared by the teams.

As I promised I wanted to write to offer my comments on this past week's course.  I was the large Caucasian student at the back of the room.

Now I believe I fit into the difficult person category (if I can only choose from the three) and took a cynic's curse into the course.  I found my expectations were unfounded and the course was one of the most useful I have had regarding communication and interpersonal relations.  Thank you.

I found the verbal judo course offers valuable tools that if used properly and always, will have a positive impact on the work I do and this Agency attempts to accomplish.  I finished reading Dr. Thompson's book this weekend and found it a great read.  It really is well put together with some excellent information. The book augmented the course learning greatly.

That is all the laudatory general comments I have but I do have some other items regarding the class and training event:

- I would have liked the verbal judo section to be longer and even more detailed.  Not that the section of the two day training you did not teach (situational planning) is not good info but it won't be used on a daily basis and doesn't need to be kata.  With no offense meant toward Mr. Hoffman or his program, that could have been a video with the written materials, while verbal judo practice and more detailed exposition would have been much more useful.
- If we would have had more time I believe the book tools and information could be enveloped into the course at a greater level.  In fact, while this is not the style of course you presented, I think this could be an even more challenging and exciting course if forearmed with the information from the book.
- My own anecdote regarding the Law & Order television show.  I love the show however many years ago in the early seasons they had a show dedicated to a criminal case involving pacemaker leads killing people.  In the trial portion of the show the "FDA Investigator" was testifying and under cross examination questioning responded at one point "I'm a regulator not law enforcement".  That grated at me at the time and thought of it during the class exposition of the fact FDAers ARE law enforcement.
- Last comment I promise...I thought this particular class picked on "rednecks" a bit too much.  I think the use of rednecks in examples was a way to use the most PC as possible stereotype and not offend people.  While not really offended I was a bit uncomfortable when the reference kept being made.  Just something to consider...

Again thank you for the class,

Ralph J. Gray

The Art of Representation, representing my agency to a contact individual AND the contact individual to my agency, clarified what I intuitively knew to be a primary function of my job.  What I didn't understand, before the course, was the importance of keeping the exchange effective by eliminating my presence in the process.  The focus remains on compliance with the regulations and safer products.

Thanks for the specific strategies and suggestions for integrating the principles into all aspects of personal and professional communication and relationships.

I recently attended a Verbal Judo course taught by Mike Manley. I was pessimistic before the course, and thought it would be really corny. I was completely wrong!  I enjoyed the course immensely.  I have already finished reading the book, and I find myself using the Verbal Judo tactics everyday (at work and at home).  Mike made the class entertaining, and I was glad that my Agency decided to send us all to the training.  Thanks.

Thanks for the course (May 8-9, in Dallas), there were several of us that enjoyed it and will find it useful in our careers. These techniques are simple to understand and part of a logical flow of conversation. Hopefully we will be able to get a refresher course next year.
On a sidebar, I recently used verbal judo to settle a situation in which a home inspector denied responsibility for missing roof damage during his inspection. He since agreed to pay for half of the repairs.

Agent Mike, FDA/OCI

I wanted to be the first to sign your guest book, as I looked around the room and discovered, to my horror, and I was the only one with a hand up that committed to visit the website.

I'm a big check list guy, probably from my pilot days, but check lists work and so does repetitive learning, similar to learning aircraft emergency procedures. I still remember my Tae Kwon Do patterns or katas too, although my leg muscles and my pants are a bit tighter than before.

I appreciated your blocks of instruction which have provided me an excellent reminder to get back to the basics.

I will contact my threat management coordinator and provide him with my experience today for consideration or inclusion in our program. I believe it will certainly aid in making our agency better. I also believe that tazers work well too, but have not gained approval to carry one. So I can't make any promises, leave that to the attorneys.

Anyway, thank you again for your motivational energy, valuable information and the opportunity to learn.

Overall I really enjoyed the course and enjoyed your manner of presentation, but way tooo short... I hope that we are able to bring you back at some point to cover the other aspects of Verbal Judo not covered last week.

Thanks for making the course fun and interesting and I think it is a good marriage with the Situational Planning that we covered on the second day.

I was fortunate to attend the two-day course presented by Mike Manley.  Mike is a professional and has the ability to keep the interest of his audience and use real life "street" examples.   Although I have used many of these techniques in the past, having it frames as a five step KATA gave me a new perspective on how to appeal to difficult people.  (Oh, and Mike, it was enjoyable being your "stage wife" for a day!)

I attended the course on 4-8-03 in Oakland, CA with Michael Manley as the instructor.

I have to say that my attitude going in to the course was negative, as I had formed a preconceived judgment (not always a good idea) that the course would be a waste of time and unneeded. I could not have been any more wrong! The training was excellent, professional, and WORTHWHILE! Lots and lots of useful and relevant information.

Mike is an excellent teacher who makes the information, concepts, and techniques interesting. His style and humor keep people alert, which is saying a lot today. I have had dozens and dozens of training courses over the years and quite frankly I have dozed off during most of them, or found them to not be very useful.

Thanks for coming into town and keep up the good work. No doubt the techniques, if applied, will gain compliance in a smooth fashion, avert potentially ugly situations, and even may save lives.

Two years ago, my company, Preit-Rubin, held a four day security meeting in Baltimore, Md. Part of the meeting was an 8 hour verbal judo presentation with Mr. Manley.
I found the course to be very beneficial to what we do in our business.
Although the lesson was only half a course, it still had a major impact on me.
I found Mr. Manley to be very effective and as a speaker/teacher, he did
an excellent job in keeping my attention through out the course.
My company had arranged for this course to become a regular part of our
training and thus resulted in a two-day course this past June.
I was so excited (sounding like a 31 year old child) that Mr. Manley would
be speaking, I could not stop telling my staff about the course and him.
Attending the two-day course, I found him to be all the more effective.
Mr. Manley is a great instructor and I hope I have the privilege to sit in
his class again.
I find that in job training, repetition is key to successfully perform 100% those duties assigned to us whether in law enforcement or security.
Thanks for everything!

Attended instructor's course in 1999 and just recertified this year. Great course and does help with giving Officers something to use other than force. Words and presence can make the difference.

Mike,
Very good feedback on the training sessions that you provided to our area officers. Keep up the good work. This should be taught in the recruit academies.

I recently attended Verbal Judo's Train the Trainer course at Jacksonville, FL (IPTM). Mike Manley did an excellent job-he is very talented! I hope I can motivate my fellow officers to put these skills to work!
