This is the best training course I have had as a Court Officer. Everything offered was doable. Mr. Manley presented the material in a manner tailored for our branch of Law Enforcement and made it clear how useful the principles of Verbal Judo are. Thank you.

Mike, I have to be honest, I was unsure as to what this course was going to consist of, and I was not looking forward to class. This course changed my whole attitude towards the way I view the public and the way I had perceived the public looked at me. I found the class refreshing and very informative. I highly recommend it to anyone who has to deal with people on a daily.

The five day instructor course I recently attended was perhaps the best officer safety/survival course I've attended in my 7 years in law enforcement. The course gives officers an easy way to communicate and be professional with even the most difficult members of our society. The way we communicate everyday, affects our safety. Thanks Mike, for a very informative and entertaining course.

I just attended your five day instructor course here in Sioux City and I was very impressed. Although I felt this course was more geared towards the uniform patrol officer, I found many excellent tools that I can use as a Detective here in S.C. With the Regional Training Center here in S.C., I've been able to attend a number different schools, but without a doubt, I found yours to be the most beneficial. I have already used some of the Katas here at home in my personal life and found that they really do work. Being able to stay in control and not lose my cool has helped me to realize that a lot more can be accomplished a lot quicker and safer. Thanks Mike, excellent school. WOOSHA!!

Thank you,

Scott Hatting

I am a PA DCNR Bureau of Forestry Forest Patrolman and council those responsible for causing forest fires.

I sometime need to take a Statement and want to be prepared in case of tempers flaring up. I would like to learn more on how I can protect myself from bodily harm as well as maintain a good rapport with the citizen. If possible defuse any confusion or anger and make that person open to me as an individual.

I look forward to talking to you soon. My work phone number is 610-582-9660. Fax 610-582-9692.

I received my tape in the mail today. Thank you for the express service. I've been glued to my chair for the past two hours. This is perhaps the single greatest training resource I have ever seen. I can hardly wait to show it to my security-enforcement class in the morning at the Salem International University. The only disappointment I have is that the tape does not include the 8 Step and 5 step procedures that were mentioned during the primary intro. Thanks once again. Sincerely, Chaplain Jerry Vance

Dear Mike, I enjoyed your lecture in verbal judo. I have always said that you can call someone a "jackass" and if you say it right, people will be thanking you for the compliment. Your class proved to me just how far you can get by talking. Let's face it, "verbal interaction" is always better than "physical interaction." Glad to see a fellow Staten Islander doing something so worthwhile.

I would like to give Mike Manley's presentation to the Social Security employees on 3-20-00 a "RAVE REVIEW". Your knowledge and insight along with your personal life experience lends great credibility to your presentation. I have been to many conferences and training sessions, I typically conclude that a memo would have been just as effective. The Verbal Judo session caused me to critically evaluate my professional conduct and conclude that I can do much better. It is my opinion that anyone who attends this program will leave a better person both personally and professionally.

I attended the instructors course in Charleston WV last year. I find I use the training every day in public contact. My Officers have found it an additional tactical option that usually catches the contact completely off guard. We all know the importance of the element of SURPRISE, and this really surprises the public, and has pleasantly surprised the Administrators who used to be swamped with Officer complaints. I truly enjoyed Michael, "Yes or No", and look forward to more Verbal Judo sparring with him in he future. Verbal Judo is a real Law Enforcement plus and Michael is a true asset to the program. I have been practicing this form of art for many years, although I never knew the name was verbal-judo. I attended the Kingston New York seminar Dec. 21- 22 1999, I found the course valuable to further enhance my creative 'style'  communicating with people, on and off the job. I would recommend that all government employees regardless of title take verbal-judo. I must admit sometimes I have to insert toothpicks in my eyelids to stay awake during some training classes/seminars not with verbal-judo. Mr. Mike Manley is an excellent instructor, Mike was in full control, and knows how to captivate and motivate his students. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom. I attended your presentation on 12/21 & 12/22/99 at the NYC DEPT. office complex in Kingston, NY. It was a very positive and productive learning experience for me. The outline and presentation is not only thought provoking but a valuable tool for assessing and modifying communication skills. It provides an ordered, rational process to guide an individual along the path to more effective communications with all people. On a more personal note, Mr. Manley, I commend you on the manner in which you presented the seminar. All the student has to do is look and listen to you and it becomes abundantly clear that you exemplify the consumate professional. You have an unmistakable passion and commitment for what you are presenting and it's value. May you and yours have a fine holiday season and happy new year. Attended you court clerk class on 11-16-99. Found it to be quite useful. Working up front with the public, it should come in handy. Now all I need to do is KATA.

Mr. Manley- attended your class given for Court Clerks. It's the first seminar (work-related), where the material presented was both useful on AND off the job. Excellent presentation. Now where do I send my resume for a job? ;-)

I attended the verbal judo class in Louisiana. i thought the class was great. The information provided in the class is so diverse and can be used in so many areas in your life. Mike was great, he was interesting and was able to keep everyone interested. Out of all the training classes that i have taken so far this was by far the most educational. i would recommend anyone who has the opportunity to take this class to do so it is well worth your time and will greatly impact your life! I am sure that while working in a retail environment. I will have plenty of opportunities to use the skills gained in today's class as well as in personal areas of my life. Thank you Mike for an unforgettable experience!

Mike, I wanted to thank you again for the outstanding two day course at PWC Criminal Justice Academy. As a Marine, in intend to employ your tactics and techniques in providing influential leadership over my Marines. Many of them I have used without naming, but with the methodology taught during the verbal judo course I can add consistency to my communication skills and avoid weaknesses triggered by emotion. Thanks again, Capt Wood

I work for a private university in Pittsburgh PA. I've been an officer there for roughly two years now and in that time have had numerous encounters with shall we say "Pleasant People." I asked my chief if he could set up a "Verbal Judo" class for the department and roughly two months later (summer of '99) we had the class offered to us. Needless to say that I couldn't wait to apply what I had been taught. Just to make a long story short I've had ample opportunity to utilize this benefit and just last night 11/6/99 at 00:36hrs I got the opportunity to once again use it. To let you know myself and my partner had a very belligerent drunk on that night and we both used our new found abilities. The technique worked for a while but ultimately this "Pleasant Person" wanted to go to jail.... which did indeed happen. But to end my now long comments "Verbal Judo " has  helped me in the past and I'm sure in the future. I recommend it to all law enforcement .

I attended your course as part of a Court Clerk's Training sponsored by the New York State Unified Court System this part Monday. I found it the first viable and relevant program they have offered since they started the training programs three years ago. The material covered was right on the mark in addressing issues court clerks encounter on a daily basis and gives us valuable skills which can only be classified as "vital" in the modern day criminal justice system. I would highly recommend that UCS consider availing themselves of your program for ALL entry level employees!!!

I attended the verbal judo class sponsored by the NYS O.C.A. on 10/19/99 and am pleased to say they came up with a seminar that was quite useful. I personally didn't have a lot of the problems addressed but have come across many of my coworkers who do. Mike Manley was a wonderful speaker and did a very good job keeping you interested considering it was an all day thing. I especially liked the fact that he was in law enforcement from the NYC area so we could all relate. What I liked most was the emphasis on professionalism and the 5 step Kata. That was something we all could find useful in our daily lives. RESPECT!

I just wish there were more people in law enforcement and just in general who acted according to these principles. Mike, keep up the good work. TAKE THEM DOWN and get your message across.

As a Sr. Court Clerk these periodic training sessions are mandatory . I remember thinking "OK here we go again, another day of trying to stay awake listening to this useless information that has no practical application". To say that I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. Our facilitator Mike Manley was dynamic and clearly passionate about the system. He colored his presentation with personal experience and insights. I can't wait for my first opportunity to apply the tools and techniques I gleaned from the seminar...

Oct. 15, 1999 I attended the class that Mike Manley taught. I believe the teachings and content of this class will be very beneficial to me and my co-workers. It is truely a shame that we have to be trained in "how to be safe in the work-place" but it is getting were no job that deal with the public is safe. Mike is an excellent speaker and teacher...to be a yankee...just kidding. I feel the tools that Mike taught us are very usable and should become second nature. I am convinced that it will benefit me in many walks of my life. Please send my regards and thanks to Mr. George Thompson for seeing the need to develop this training program and for his choice in superior educators such as Mike Manley to teach the program. 10/6/99 I just completed the training course that Mike Manley gave for the Urban Park Service. I am a Ranger and his course will be incredibly valuable to me. I know that it will help me deal with enforcement issues that up until now I would have rather not dealt with. Verbal Judo seems to be a very effective way of controlling situations without using physical force.. I look forward to using what Mike taught us at work and in my private life. Thank you very much for taking the time to train us. WOOSHA! -Sarah Wolpert

I completed the Verbal Judo course last week. I found the class to be interesting. There are a lot of valid points behind Verbal Judo. It appears as if Verbal Judo goes against what we are taught in police academy's: tell the person once, maybe twice what you want him/her to do, and if they don't comply, you can up the force. After having said that, I feel there are going to be times when Verbal Judo won't work. In the same breath, there are more situations than not when it will work. It's all about treating people like people and treating those how you would like to be treated.

Thanks.

Dear Mike, I can't tell you how much I enjoyed today's class! I'm glad that all field office employees will take the course. It will be invaluable. I thought it was a bit long for 1 day-maybe SSA will decide to go the 2 days in the future. Basically, the course affirmed my beliefs in how to approach and deal with our customers. I find that I do a lot of this already, but this allowed for me to see it from a distance, as opposed to being in the middle of it every day. Of course, there was loads of new info as well. Again, I really enjoyed it. Also, I work in 1 of those offices where we tend to become a bit complacent. Thanks for the reminder. Feel free to contact me at anytime for updates, etc.

Mike Martin
